Fort Loudoun Lake, on the Tennessee River at Knoxville, is a popular destination for recreation and is known for great bass fishing, boating and birdwatching.
The tailwater area below the dam is the perfect spot to see a variety of water birds, including herons, cormorants, bulls, osprey and even bald eagles.
The lake is connected by a short canal to Tellico Lake on the Little Tennessee River. The canal offers commercial barges access to Tellico without the need for a lock. Barges passing through the Fort Loudoun lock carry about half a million tons of cargo yearly.
